Maintenance Officer

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site role for a Maintenance Officer at Preston International School, Akure. The Maintenance Officer will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, and general upkeep of the school’s buildings, facilities, equipment, furniture, utilities, and infrastructure, helping to ensure a safe, functional, clean, and pleasant environment for students, staff, and visitors.

The successful candidate should be practically skilled and experienced in at least one recognised trade, preferably plumbing, carpentry, or electrical installation and repairs. The Maintenance Officer will carry out routine and preventive maintenance, respond promptly to maintenance faults and emergencies, troubleshoot problems within their area of competence, and support general maintenance activities across the school.

The role holder will work under the supervision and leadership of the Head of Maintenance and may be required to work collaboratively with other maintenance staff and external contractors where specialised repairs or technical expertise are required.

As Preston International School is a residential and boarding school, the Maintenance Officer must demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to respond appropriately to urgent maintenance issues that may arise within the school environment.

Key Responsibilities

The Maintenance Officer will be responsible for:

  • Carrying out routine, preventive, and corrective maintenance on school buildings, facilities, equipment, furniture, and infrastructure.
  • Applying professional skills in their area of trade, particularly plumbing, carpentry, or electrical installation and repairs.
  • Inspecting school facilities regularly to identify faults, defects, hazards, and maintenance requirements.
  • Responding promptly to maintenance requests and carrying out repairs within agreed timelines.
  • Troubleshooting and resolving faults involving plumbing systems, electrical fittings, doors, windows, furniture, fixtures, and other school facilities, according to the officer's area of competence.
  • Carrying out minor general repairs and maintenance work outside their primary trade where appropriately skilled and authorised.
  • Supporting the installation, replacement, and maintenance of equipment, fittings, fixtures, and school facilities.
  • Reporting major faults, safety concerns, or repairs requiring specialist attention to the Head of Maintenance.
  • Assisting in coordinating and supervising external contractors engaged for specialised maintenance or repair work.
  • Maintaining appropriate records of maintenance work completed, faults identified, materials used, and outstanding repairs.
  • Ensuring that tools, equipment, and maintenance materials are properly used, stored, and maintained.
  • Following all school health and safety procedures and ensuring that maintenance work does not create unnecessary risks to students, staff, or visitors.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping practices in workshops, maintenance areas, and work locations.
  • Supporting emergency repairs and maintenance requirements when necessary.
  • Working collaboratively with other members of the maintenance and facilities team to ensure the effective operation and upkeep of the school.
  • Carrying out any other reasonable duties related to maintenance and facilities management as assigned by the Head of Maintenance or School Management.

Qualifications and Person Specification

The successful candidate should possess:

  • A relevant Trade Test Certificate, National Technical Certificate (NTC), NABTEB Technical qualification, City & Guilds qualification, or other recognised vocational/trade certification in Plumbing, Carpentry, Electrical Installation, or a related maintenance trade.
  • Demonstrable practical experience and competence in at least one of the following trades:
    • Plumbing
    • Carpentry and joinery
    • Electrical installation and maintenance
  • Knowledge of general building and facilities maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to diagnose faults, troubleshoot problems, and carry out repairs efficiently and safely.
  • Good understanding of relevant health and safety regulations, safe working practices, and the proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow technical instructions, maintenance schedules, and work orders.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise multiple maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a maintenance team.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A responsible, reliable, honest, and safety-conscious approach to work.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to carry out practical maintenance duties.
  • Previous experience in a school, residential, commercial, hospitality, or similar facilities environment will be an added advantage.
